Editing is often described as construction, building the narrative, the story, the rhythm, the emotion. Yet in her own filmmaking practice, Liis Nimik has found that alongside construction there is always an element of chance, something unexpected that can open new creative possibilities. Inspired by Roland Barthes’ Camera Lucida and its ideas of Studium and Punctum, Liis has spent years exploring how chance can function within film, and how editors might use it strategically to deepen meaning.
Join award-winning filmmaker and editor Liis Nimik for a two-hour, in-person masterclass at the #DocsConnect Conscious Filmmaking Lab in Sitges. Drawing from her acclaimed debut Sundial and her experience shaping some of Estonia’s most celebrated arthouse films, Liis will share practical examples of chance seeking in editing and offer a new way of looking at images that goes beyond construction.
This masterclass is designed for filmmakers who want to approach editing not only as craft but as an artistic and exploratory practice that leaves space for the unexpected.
Date: 19 October, 12:00 to 13:30
